Emergency power supply
What is a power station (as an emergency supply)?
Power stations are ideal power supplies for in and around your home, so you can continue to use electrical appliances at all times. Many power stations allow you to add extra batteries to expand the capacity. This creates a power of up to 25kWh. This creates solutions that can power (part of) your home. Combined with integrated UPS functionality, these electric generators can also increasingly be used as emergency power during power outages or failures. The unique features of power stations are the different outputs, from USB-(C), 12V to 230V AC and the ability to charge them in many ways. You can charge your (portable) power stations with a 230V power adapter, car charger or solar panels.
Advantages of a power station as an emergency power supply
The main advantage why you want to buy a heavier power station is of course that you have a backup during a power outage/outage. In the past, gasoline-powered generators were the first choice, nowadays more and more people prefer to use an electric power station. Why? A number of advantages of power stations on electricity are listed below.
- High capacity: the strongest power stations have a capacity of more than 4000Wh. You can also often expand them with extra batteries, with which you can create a capacity of up to 25kWh. This is enough to power all your electrical appliances in the house for days.
- Use indoors: power stations do not emit emissions, such as carbon monoxide, unlike gas generators. It is therefore possible to place an electricity generator (power station) indoors. An additional advantage is that you have fewer long cables through your house.
- Better for the environment: one of the possibilities for charging power stations is with solar panels. This generates green energy.
- Saving money in the long term: Rising electricity prices are making it increasingly attractive to “grow” your own energy. You do this, for example, by solar panels. When you have energy left over, you can store this energy in power stations. This makes you less dependent on the grid and you can save money in the long run.
What is the best power station as an emergency power supply
Before you buy a power station, it should be clear how much power you need or consume. If you plan to power a few (small) devices during a power outage, then a smaller battery will be enough for lighting and essential electronic devices. For larger applications, such as powering your entire home, you’ll need a more powerful system with a larger battery capacity. UPS systems are an excellent choice in this case, as they can not only provide power during a power outage, but also continuously protect critical equipment from voltage fluctuations.
Once you know how many watts you need, you can start looking for a battery with the right capacity to meet your needs. If you need a larger capacity later on, consider a modular system or a power station that can be expanded with additional batteries. Many UPS systems offer this flexibility, so you are prepared for both small and large power outages. Below are the best power stations – selected by us – during a power outage or outage, from smallest to largest, in terms of wattages.
Bluetti AC300 The Bluetti AC300 Power Station is the only Bluetti power station without an integrated battery, which means that the AC300 Power Station can only be used in combination with at least one B300 battery module (not included). The device is suitable for charging electronic devices up to 3000W with a 6000W peak loads. To generate more than 3000W of power, you can add extra AC300 batteries to the system.
EcoFlow Delta Pro
This portable power station has a capacity of 3600Wh and is therefore a real powerhouse, which has the potential to power your entire home. You can also expand this electric generator with extra batteries. This allows you to reach a maximum capacity of 25kWh. Then, using the Smart Home Panel, you can integrate the Delta Pro+ extension into your power supply.
Bluetti EP500 Pro With its innovative LiFeP04 battery and cutting-edge technology, the BLUETTI EP500 Pro is one of the most powerful and versatile power stations on the market. This makes it suitable as a power backup during a power failure or outage. With a capacity of no less than 5120, the EP500 Pro is suitable for heavier devices with a maximum power of 3000W and 6000W peak load.
Comparison between power stations, home batteries and traditional emergency power generators
A power station offers a modern, quiet and environmentally friendly solution for emergency power supply, as opposed to a traditional emergency power generator. Where generators rely on fossil fuels, such as petrol or diesel, and are often associated with noise and emissions, power stations operate fully electrically and emission-free. This makes them extremely suitable for indoor use or in situations where noise pollution is undesirable.
Home batteries are another innovative option within emergency power solutions. Like power stations, they offer the ability to store power and make it readily available during power outages. Home batteries are ideal for integrating renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, contributing not only to reliability but also to long-term energy savings.
Another important difference between power stations, home batteries and emergency power generators is the flexibility and applicability. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in power stations or home batteries switches immediately in the event of a power outage, without interruptions. This provides additional security in critical applications, such as in homes, server rooms or offices. Traditional emergency power generators often take a few seconds to start up, which is not acceptable in some situations, for example in hospitals or data centers where continuity is vital.
Power stations are also more compact and lighter, which makes them easier to install and move around. They can be easily charged via solar panels, a wall outlet, or car charger, which adds to their user-friendliness. An emergency power generator, on the other hand, requires regular maintenance, a constant supply of fuel, and is often less durable to use.
For a reliable and efficient backup power supply, power stations and home batteries are excellent choices. They combine the advantages of a UPS with the capacity to power devices for a long time, without being dependent on fossil fuels. This makes them sustainable and future-oriented solutions compared to traditional generators.
